I OFTEN wonder who enforces the laws of this country after recently reading about the Government’s new Extremism Bill, which is supposedly to curb radicalisation by Jihadists.
But as with all laws it seems this one could be used to silence Christians and free speech. Conservative MP (for Sheerwood) Mark Spencer has called for Extreme Disruption Orders (EDOs) to be used to silence Christian teachers who teach a traditional view of marriage, and those who say same sex marriage is “wrong” should be subject to the tough new restrictions which were drawn up by Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May.
These comments contradict a recent letter I received from Lord (Tariq) Amad of Wimbledon, Home Office Minister, (Countering Extremism) via my local MP Jessica Morden which states “This Bill is not intended to restrict anyone’s freedom of speech or right to practice their faith. Stressing these are the core values underpinning British society that we are seeking to protect.
“As regards with people expressing their disagreement with same sex marriage, will they come under police scrutiny? The answer is emphatically no.” Lord Ahmad goes on to say, “The new law will have safeguards to ensure it is only used where it is needed to stop extremism and protect the public. This will include ensuring the use of power is clearly in the public interest and will need to be approved by a judge.”
This last sentence is what should worry people, some judges in the present political climate tend to interpret a law to suit the flavour of the moment, we wait and see what transpires.
