THE British Government is contributing a great deal of money to supporting genuine refugees fleeing wars in the Middle East in refugee camps in Turkey and Jordan. The thousands who are causing havoc in Calais have rejected the offer of safe refuge in camps and have refused to claim asylum in the many European countries they have travelled through before arriving at Calais. It is therefore incorrect to describe them as refugees, they are economic migrants willing to commit acts of trespass and vandalism in order to enter the UK illegally. Once into the UK they will expect to be housed and fed, to receive money, legal advice, health care, education and interpreters to ensure that their “rights” are upheld. Given the right to stay they will want to bring in family members – wives children and elderly parents. The costs for the British taxpayer if we allow this, for the millions who would like to come, would be catastrophic. I feel sorry for them as individuals but stand firm in my view that the Government must be prepared to use reasonable levels of force to uphold its borders.
