IT IS always fantastic to see so many young people smiling, celebrating and congratulating each other on their exam results. Sadly, thousands of young people’s ambitions can be crushed because of low academic grades. It is absolutely vital we stand by them and help them to look to their future.
At The Prince’s Trust, we know that many young people face other problems. These include bullying, mental health issues and problems at home. It is crucial that these young people are given the support they need to help them have successful futures. Research proves that young people with less than five GCSEs are almost twice as likely as their peers to believe they will never amount to anything. Schools, charities, governments and employers need to get the message across that there are always other options, and that bad exam results are not the end of the world.
Apprenticeships offer a viable alternative for many school leavers better suited to vocational training and can open the door to a successful career. With skills shortages appearing in every sector, on-the-job learning programmes are crucial for the futures of both young people and the wider economy. We know that unemployed young people want to work and that employers have vacancies to fill. That’s why we are committed to working with a wide range of employers to help them see the potential in young people and avoid the skills vacuum in the future.
Nearly one in five young people (19 per cent) in Wales is struggling to find work. Ensuring young people are work-ready, providing access to training and enabling young people to set up in business, will ensure this number doesn’t rise any further. We appeal to those young people who are not sure about their next step to get in touch and see how we can help. Visit princes-trust.org.uk or call 0800 842 842.
