A PLEA for assistance. Do any of your readers remember the firm of Messrs Richards & Co of Newport?
In the pre-war days and during the war years (and probably for some time afterwards) they operated a number of Steam Rollers which were engaged on road repairs throughout south and mid Wales.
In April 1943 one of their steam rollers stopped at the Trout Inn in Beulah (near Llanwrtyd Wells in Brecknockshire) for a lunch break.
The driver of the engine was Albert Toon and he was accompanied by his wife, Florence who was 58 years old.
The steam roller was pulling a wooden living van in which the couple lived whilst away from home mending roads.
As they left the village a large tree crashed down on the van and she was killed.
She was buried in the village churchyard on Saturday April 10th 1943.
This was just three days after the dreadful event.
The event is remembered by older villagers with sadness.
I am trying to find any information about the Toon family and the company of Richards & Co in order to produce a small booklet on the awful event which will assist in raising funds to have a stone placed on Florence’s unmarked grave.
Feel free to contact me with any memories you may have about this with the following email address: stustones@yahoo.co.uk.
