I SEE that the Government is considering blacklisting homeopathy. This will deprive society of a very beneficial medical treatment. Objections are made on the basis that there is no approved methodology to demonstrate how it works. Do we fully know how aspirin works? Objectors also rabbit on about the placebo effect. This won’t do. You can’t fool all the people all the time. I have known two doctors and one highly qualified nurse, all friends, who have used homeopathy successfully for years.
I recommend Constance Babbington-Smith’s book on the homeopath Doctor Margery Blackie as indeed Doctor Blackie’s own book. This lady was not a successful practitioner all her life just on a placebo effect. In the 1970s the BBC showed some documentaries on the subject. In one of them a veterinary surgeon who used homeopathy on cows proved that they made more progress with homeopathic treatment than with conventional. He asked if the cows had been conned by the placebo effect.
There were also some interesting programmes hosted by Professor David Taylor-Reilly who started investigating homeopathy with no knowledge of the subject and became a convinced advocate.
