AS I STOOD in front of the David Bowie mural in Brixton last week I reflected on why he had such an impact on many for 50 years.
Not just fans but also the recognition by the media and many other artistes. Many people are aware that he changed his style, haircuts and fashion on a yearly basis, but it was the fact that each album was completely different to its predecessor.
The folk rock Hunky Dory, to hard rock Man Who Sold the World, glam rock Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, followed by soul of Young Americans and later to electro of Low and Heroes.
All these changes made him an interesting character who brought in change and innovation even if it was good or bad and even if annoyed some fans.
He also embraced social change and was responsible for many like myself to challenge and speak out.
I have been a rocker, mod, new romantic, new wave yet still listen to classical, Burt Baccharach and alternative rock and rap.
His influence on us was ever changing but most of all he taught us to be tolerant and not be afraid of failure.
Never stand still, break into innovation and inspire others. I will miss him as he was unique but he has left a great legacy for us all.
