TONIGHT I went with a friend to see a performance of The Phantom of the Opera at the Dolmen Theatre in Newport, which was mostly performed by youngsters of school age, with considerable support, no doubt, from some very talented adults.
While it might be different from the West End production, there were many features, technical ones like scene changing, special effects, organisation of a large cast and costume, and some excellent singing, which made it a splendidly entertaining evening
This is what education should mean for every child, the opportunity for the self-expression of the next generation, to develop their minds, imagination and talents beyond the 10th-rate material which the TV unloads into every lounge and each uncritical adolescent.
This is the kind of art which should bind our generations, in appreciation, pride and the best hope for a future of fulfilment.
