QUESTIONS have already been asked about why electrification of the main line to London was at all necessary. The enormous cost and the disruption, now being suffered by many communities, was to achieve, I am told, a faster journey time from Cardiff to London. On average, faster by 10 whole minutes.
Leaving aside the obvious comment that, if you want to get somewhere sooner, you could start earlier, let us reflect.
In the late nineteen-fifties, as a young lad, I used to put my father on the London train. It took one hour and 28 minutes, non-stop, to Paddington. Now it takes a lot longer, partly because all trains seem to stop at Bristol Parkway.
The bridge is set to close on May 3rd and will cause enormous chaos to local people and businesses alike. If you don’t believe me, ask the people near to the Somerton Bridge.
One matter of particular concern, which I and my colleagues have brought to the attention of one of our local councillors, is the footbridge from Tunnel Terrace to Baneswell.
This has no lighting and is concealed from public view until you step onto the footbridge. Come the darker nights, it will be an invitation to muggings, or worse.
This is the recommended route for pedestrians from the Clytha Park area to town.
I have been advised that it is in the ownership of Network Rail.
It is time for action, at the very least, proper lighting to create a safe passageway. Network Rail….pull your finger out.
