HAVING taken “voluntary redundancy” in 1989 after 41 years in the industry, I suppose it was a gut reaction on listening to Michael Heseltine’s declaration at the beginning of the end to the coal industry (1992).
Steel and coal are paralleled in that the price of imported coal, together with the privatisation of governments, led to the demise of the industry.
Then as now a call for unity of purpose is necessary in order to save the steel industry.
