IN RESPONSE to David Hassell’s letter, 16 May, regarding the “Hellathon”.
As with last year, this year was opposed by many local councillors whose wards will be disrupted by this event yet again.
The legality of the event is given by the Welsh Government, who in co-operation with the organisers, determine the route, times and organisation. Last year no policing was organized?
The WG then dictate down to local authorities which roads each must raise road closures for, as it is local authorities who are responsible for highways.
They are always advertised in “an appropriate “ manner, which could be improved.
When local councils/councillors raise objections to routes, they are met with veiled threats of court action and/or possible financial cutbacks in any following settlements from the WG, effectively “blackmailing” any authority that steps out of line.
This is not a true democratic way to run an event of this nature.
