IT IS BAD enough that there are now no public amenities at St Woolos Cemetery — the grounds maintenance is deplorable, all the water butts and taps have been removed, and the gates are now closed at 4.45pm.
As most working people don’t finish until then, I find this absurd throughout the summer months — but they open at 6am!
How many people have the time to go to visit the graves of their loved ones at that time of the morning before work?
I emailed Newport city contact centre several times and asked who made this decision and why, but they either couldn’t answer me or were very reluctant to, eventually leaving a member of the cemetery staff to ring me.
He was helpful but again couldn’t tell me who made the decision and why.
As to the maintenance, his ground staff had been cut by half, the decision to take out the water and to lock the gates early came from the civic centre.
I have always been able to go to the cemetery of an evening for the last 25 years. What has changed? Is it a safety issue?
If so, why are the side gates open to the public and is it really safe to walk in the cemetery in the evening, especially for a woman alone? If she had a car and felt threatened she could lock herself in and drive away, not so easy to get to safety when walking.
St Woolos has members of the Shackleton team and three defenders of the battle of Rorke’s Drift buried there.
This cemetery is not only a place where our loved ones rest, it is a place of history and should be open and revered, not locked away and neglected.
