I MUST congratulate Mr Sheppard (21/7) on being one of the very few Welsh speakers and also one of the very few readers of the Councils Newport Matters. To read the three pages in Welsh is to be applauded, though 90% of people throw it straight into the bin. I have no intention of starting another Welsh language debate as it has already done the rounds many times. However he thinks that providing one Welsh School here (which hasn’t been done yet) will increase Welsh speakers, he is wrong. In Newport, Welsh is very much a minority language and would be even less used if WAG stopped introducing more ludicrous regulations. In the meantime my copy will continue to be dispatched to the bin as it contains little news or information of any value.
