FOLLOWING the vote in Parliament this week that approved the renewal of the Trident nuclear submarine weapons system, it needs to be pointed out that most of the media, if not all of it, consistently gave the cost of the new system as being under £50 billion. This is of course a very large sum of money, but it is nowhere near the sum that CND estimates the new Trident submarine system will cost the country. CND estimates the lifetime cost to be well over £200 billion. If you think this is an exaggeration, recall the countless examples in recent years of government spending contracts going over budget. It is doubtful the new Trident system will buck this trend.
