FURTHER to Argus article on August 10 regarding improving recycling in Torfaen.
I would suggest that Torfaen actually collect recycling waste instead of leaving it on the side of the road.
Last week, our main bin was emptied and kitchen waste taken, but black boxes were left on side of lane (still there actually).
This has happened numerous times; our collection is a Friday and we believe it is because if they are running late, then our boxes are left, ie papers, plastics, glass.
I sent in an email to Torfaen and had five acknowledgements, but no answer as to why they were not collected.
This is the norm from TCBC.
As an enthusiastic recycler/upcycler, I wrote a year ago to TCBC Recycling concerning an idea I had which has since been taken up by Newport City Council – The Tip Shop, and the TV programme Money For Nothing, to recycle/upcycle decent “shabby chic” furniture and other items destined for the tip.
No reply to my first email to TCBC but on my second letter John Cunningham replied that “they hoped to implement this idea some time in the future” as the contract was now with another company?
To be honest, if the bin men cannot be bothered to pick up our recycling on a normal day, I do not hold out much hope in Torfaen being able to organise a Tip Shop at New Inn which could drastically reduce landfill.
Newport City monies contribute to the wages of the men working at The Tip Shop and the leftovers go to charities.
There is a huge opportunity here, money for charity, cheap furniture etc for the low-wage home etc etc.
Here’s hoping.
