IN REFERENCE to C J Barnes in Grassroots on the subject of Bettws Rugby Club on Monday, August 15.
I was honoured to be part of the season 1977/ 1978 in which we achieved the “double” league championship and also Newport and District cup at Rodney Parade. This squad of players included Patrick Brunnock, John Dennison, Colin Clifford, Tommy Rederick, Martyn Parry, Michael Ball, Michael Pratt, Andrew Betts, Mark Bollington, James Brunnock, A. Fowler, J. Collins, D. Jones, R.James, David P Michael crum, Ritchie Donovan and others where my memory has lapsed. Having left youth rugby with Newport, playing senior rugby in my first season with these players had an enormous influence on my performance and love for the game. These were grassroots rugby players who had instilled flair which I pursued to achieve a lot of honours in rugby and also to make life-long friends in all rugby circles.
