SO THE M4 Public Inquiry is postponed. Many of us hope this monstrosity of a scheme is abandoned.
Yes, we need better transportation across South Wales, but the M4 Diversion is environmentally, economically and socially unsustainable. Roads policy in England is ‘no new motorways’ – as usual, Welsh Government (WG) is behind the times.
Anyone examining the WG case won’t be surprised that forecasting has been called into question. Publicly available traffic figures show that for one of the Brynglas approaches, traffic decreased between 2004 and 2014. Other lengths show little increase. And in terms of congestion and accidents, WG refused figures. I am pursing a FOI external appeal. So why is the Welsh Govt so unhelpful with information that should be in the public domain? The only explanation is that they are trying to hide facts that would ruin their case. But don’t take just my views, or the thousands of others who oppose the scheme – the Commissioner for Future Generations wrote a scathing letter to the minister, criticising many aspects of the WG case – traffic forecasting, sustainable development appraisal, alternative options not considered and more. Give up Carwyn – spend the money on an international class integrated Metro, and fast.
