I’M GLAD Labour AM Lynne Neagle has spoken out against the Tory Government slashing of a household’s maximum benefit from £26,000 to £20,000 a year. (South Wales November 11, 2016).  This callus cut will hit some of the most vulnerable families hard with tenants in council/social housing with three children losing at least £100 per week in housing benefit in 18 per cent of local authority areas. (1. Chartered Institute of Housing). The new benefits cap could leave 320,000 children destitute and homeless with 116,000 lower income households facing being priced out and evicted from their homes. Surely a better way to save government finances is to put a cap on private rents? The private rent sector have made a fortune (£6 billion per year) as people (mostly young) cannot afford a mortgage and there is an acute shortage of social housing to rent!
