I have been blind from birth and have a disabled bus pass to help me get around.
Sometimes it is helpful to have someone to assist me on these journeys, so I was pleased to learn about the existence of a companion pass.
A partially sighted friend of mine from Ebbw Vale had applied to Blaenau Gwent Council and was issued a pass immediately.
As I live in Rhymney, I applied to Caerphilly Council for my pass.
They refused. I tried on numerous occasions, but Caerphilly continued to say no.
When asked why, I was told it was due to the fact that I was only blind.
Apparently, you need to be both blind and deaf, or have an additional problem such as trouble walking, to qualify for a companion pass from Caerphilly Council.
My friend has more sight than I do but because I live in Caerphilly and not Blaenau Gwent I cannot have the companion bus pass.
I would like to know why this is.
Perhaps Caerphilly Council could think about considering my needs, and those of people like me, rather than being concerned with their own agenda.
That would surely be the decent thing to do.
