THE Editor of the South Wales Argus will hardly be encouraged by the comments on the letters web page while he and his industry fight for press freedom.
Many of the points raised in relation to this newspaper must be taken on board and urgently addressed however, lets not throw the baby out with bathwater for as recent times have shown, government and politicians generally are no more trustworthy than some of the mainstream broadsheet or red top journals.
That being said, I shudder to think of a democracy without scrutiny that; for all its ills; the press is our only way of exposing much of the corruption, mal-administration and injustices in society.
It is a little naive of some commentators to criticize newspapers for trying to attract advertisers to stay afloat when readership is on a downward path.
The enactment of the proposed legislation will indeed place an unfair burden on our press and ultimately lead to the loss of our regional newspapers. We must not let this happen!
