I FOUND your article on the “Presentation Spitfire” of great interest, the government figure of £5000 as the cost of the aircraft was actually well below the true cost.
According to my copy of the “Spitfire History” the definitive guide on this aircraft, BM265 did serve with the squadrons mentioned, but was involved in an accident with a Blackburn Botha bomber at RAF Prestwick in October 1942, suffered category “E” damage, and would have been written off. There is no reference to it being sent to North Africa.
