EVER since the closure of the eastbound link off the M4 for Caerleon, traffic has been encouraged to leave the motorway at junction 26 and make it’s way along Pillmawr Road in Malpas where it eventually joins the narrow country lane towards Caerleon.
Mayhem is caused by high volumes of vehicles using this route, many of which are guided by satnav technology and of an unsuitably large size.
The Malpas end of Pillmawr Road is particularly plagued by this traffic flowing constantly all day long and is especially worse at peak times.
Many driver’s using this route are also clearly unaware of the 20 mph speed limit that applies.
The current speed humps along this section of road are wholly ineffective as some driver’s continue to ignore the speed limit and race along this stretch.
More than once I have personally witnessed near accidents on the nearby school crossing and on two occasions an ambulance had to be called following an actual collision with a child.
A speed camera would surely be the sensible solution!
Perhaps it would also be sensible to consider reopening the M4 eastbound link with Caerleon, solving all these issues at a stroke
