RE: FLY-TIPPING article: I applaud any initiative that aims to tackle the problem of fly-tipping and thank the Argus for its support, however, the real story is how success is measured.
Under this council fly-tipping has reached epidemic levels this council claim to have a dedicated team of three officers, yet the article states they are reliant on volunteers despite cutting Streetscene staffing.
One of the councillors (a cabinet member) pictured ought to hang his head in shame for refusing to view the problems of fly-tipping across my ward of Llanwern, refusing to consider CCTV even though it would save hundreds of thousands of pounds by their own calculations.
This is all compounded by the very same cabinet member refusing to legitimately answer more than two questions on the fly-tipping in the rural wards, so much for city of democracy.
Success has to be measured by a reduction in fly-tipping not an increase in clearing up, this will only be achieved when the council adopt a true zero tolerance approach and effective education from primary school level upwards.
If you want to see how fly-tipping is really affecting my ward I will be more than happy to give anyone a tour.
Martyn Kellaway
Councillor for the ward of Llanwern
Llandevaud
