HAVING been a regular reader and supporter of your paper all my life, I am dismayed at your paper and the local Newport councillor’s along with the AMs and MP giving support to the routes for the proposed M4 relief road. Part of the overloading of traffic on the M4 is too much freight traffic making short trips. Surely a possible solution should have been to liaise with the TATA at Llanwern to use the rail infrastructure that has been within the works from the day it started. From the works to Tesco it is about half a mile on the EDR road, this would alleviate at least the Tesco Freight train daily travelling past the works going to Freight Terminal at Wentlooge, then lorries travelling back to Magor along the M4, or is everyone hell bent on destroying what we have left of the Gwent Levels. But, of course, Cardiff will benefit from a relief road not Newport. Do Newport City Council care about the villages they inherited at the last boundary charge, just look at the state of our roads and rubbish constantly dumped alongside, probably the council tax will be reduced in the outlying villages to compensate.
