I HAVE just watched the full debate on waste and recycling, conducted by Welsh Government members in your Parliament. You are a credit to the world in demonstrating the possibilities and potential for beneficial environmental change.

One of the assembled members mentioned potential world leadership in recycling and I believe he is absolutely correct. Your competitor countries for world leader in recycling, both count incineration as part of the mix, everyone knows burning material is not recycling - it is simply another form of waste. Under such circumstance Wales is clearly the world leader.

The Germans have an incineration component in recycling and one of Taiwan’s incinerators has a rotating restaurant built around its chimney and is built right next to a local vegetable garden - dioxin and Daikons and furans and fruit don’t mix.

When I first visited Wales around 17 years ago your recycling level was at 5%. I hope the Welsh people will take time to reflect on the excellent work and leadership of both its government and its courageous staff and the numerous NGOs who put Wales in this leadership position.

Well done Wales!
