READING Councillor Allan Morris’s letter today, I must totally agree with him about the unfairness of the cabinet system in local councils. He is right that all councillors should receive the same payments, cabinet or backbenchers.
Being on the cabinet brings in a tidy sum for the lucky person in addition to the normal councillors salary. I think, sadly, we have surpassed the old committee system but a fairer way of allocating cabinet posts is to be backed.
Allan’s point about picking the right cabinet person too is relevant. Looking at Newport’s (Labour) Cabinet I do rather wonder how some of them got on to it, as their records and experience raise some queries. There must be a better way of choosing people of the right calibre for these major council jobs.
Just a few thoughts for the approaching May council elections.
