I read with dismay that the WRU still intend to drop both Gwent and Newport from the name of the regional rugby side playing at Rodney Parade. Have they learnt nothing from the past 14 years of, at best, mediocre-sized crowds at Dragons’ games?

To survive and prosper the Dragons need lots of supporters, and by dropping Newport from the name the WRU is alienating the largest demographic in the region, and denying Newport rugby followers any ownership of, identity with and loyalty towards the team. This may seem a trivial issue but it matters to many people, as witnessed by the fact that, of the eight Dragons season ticket-holders I regularly attend matches with, only three now intend to renew next season.

Before regions, Newport RFC was a relatively successful team with good crowds and was, in effect, a region or “super club”. I believe the latent support is still there but the WRU needs to recognise that and keep Newport in the name.

We are probably stuck with “Dragons” - although it’s a weak brand because it’s used by so many other teams and sports in Wales - but for goodness’ sake acknowledge the reality of the marketplace and give Newport rugby supporters something to belong to and cheer about.
