IF - AND I repeat “if” - it turns out that the catastrophic and fatal fire of the Grenfell tower block in London was caused by the blatant negligence of any individuals involved in the construction, planning and refurbishment etc of the building, then it is about time that company bigwigs faced prison sentences.

For example, many people here in Wales - and the rest of the world - were incredulous that not one manager from the National Coal Board was imprisoned following the horrific, and totally unavoidable crushing of the populated school at Aberfan in 1966 - killing 144 adults and children - by a giant slag heap that the NCB were warned about on numerous occasions.

Disgracefully, the then chairman of the coal board was never punished, but was - unbelievably - given a cushy new post to advise the government on health and safety matters (I am not making this up).

People who complain – or campaign - tirelessly, about something they perceive as unsafe must never be ignored.

The threat of a possible prison term will help wake up any complacent managers who dismiss concerned individuals out of hand.

Many lives will then be saved, rather than destroyed.
