Following Mr Pimley’s letter on the Welsh language, I am unable to follow his lines of argument.

Firstly, his complaint that Welsh language legislation by the Welsh Assembly is unrepresentative and biased is farcical. All assembly legislation is passed in a democratic way so is he actually anti-democratic?

Secondly he makes the claim that by opening Welsh medium schools, worlds most important language, English, is being “downgraded.” What a wild assertion and could he explain how it is possible on a practical level, to downgrade English in Welsh schools even if this was so desired. English is so all-pervasive.

Also is Mr Pimley aware that 95% of the pupils attending Welsh medium schools in this area come from homes where English is the sole language. So would parents of such children continue to send them to Welsh schools if there was a chance that their English would be harmed. I think not.

Lastly, he states we are being sold down the river economically by Welsh language enthusiasts. How astonishing! His scare mongering tactics continue along then posing the question “will inward investment to Wales be hindered by the adoption of Welsh language?”

Could I reliably inform him that potential investors to Wales will not care about the fact that we have two languages here. Their motivation will be purely financial - ask Airbus (North Wales).

However perhaps Mr Pimley knows something we do not. Perhaps there is, a correlation between lack of inward investment into Wales and the expansion of the Welsh language and we have all missed it!

Mr Pimley can, no doubt, be expected to be headhunted by the assembly to assist in attracting inward investment. So a simple formula - the government now closes all Welsh schools and spends all saved money on attracting inward investment. Wales will then move from being the poorest of four countries of the UK.

People of the same mindset as Mr Pimley will become the saviours in a new, very prosperous (and non-Welsh speaking) Wales.
