SORRY to hear of the passing of Glyn Davies, a stalwart lover of the city and the former Borough Treasurer. He was in that post for many years and I recall him in so many council meetings, when he would always come up with a financial solution to the most intriguing problems.
One in particular was the now defunct Usk Barrage proposal. When asked about funding, he came out with millions of pounds the council had accrued over many years, so that was solved.
A generally quiet man but always willing to give his views on financial matters. His annual budget statement in setting the year’s rate was a pleasure to hear at committee! He had a way of mentioning items such as Rate Support Grant or Virement, which relieved the atmosphere of a long debate.
On retirement in the 1980s he fully participated in many Newport activities, such as the Civic Society, where his experience with keeping the books was outstanding. Newport has lost another faithful officer of the old school, and I offer my sympathy to his family. RIP.
