ACCORDING to some obscure census in 2011, apparently about 19% of Wales' population “can speak Welsh.”
I wonder, however, what smaller percentage use it as their first language.
In view of this tiny proportion, any proposal to force-feed Welsh through already beleaguered schools must be seen as unjustified and highly irresponsible.
Bilingualism may be applauded when appropriate but in Wales this is surely not the case.
Latin and Ancient Greek, once taught as main-stream languages in our schools, have largely disappeared to become evolutionary fossils.
Perhaps Welsh should be allowed to follow peacefully in their wake. Carwyn Jones declares that Welsh is “one of our treasures.” Well perhaps some treasure is best buried.
