I FEEL I must write in support of Mrs C Lee (letters 28th July).
Everything she says is true.

Over the years I’ve seen Newport deteriorate from a bustling, pleasant shopping centre into the run down, dirty, sad city it is today.
After waiting for years for the hyped Friars Walk, we have ended up with an arcade of sports and mobile phone shops (the only occupants being staff).

The fact that we had two perfectly good Victorian arcades was ignored by the council.

I could weep when I go into Newport market now.

I remember it when it was an exciting place to visit, with both floors choc-a-block with stalls and customers.
Many beautiful old buildings have been razed in the name of progress; and several golden opportunities have been passed over to encourage visitors to the city.

The chartist history (mosaic bulldozed).

The Medieval Ship, to name two.

Mrs Lee is spot on about the parks and gardens dept. they are doing a wonderful job, year after year, and should be given must credit for that.
I understand why the coach companies are so popular.
Everyone wants to get away!
