YOUR correspondent Mr Plaisted (letters, September 13) says that the rights of the unborn child (more correctly, foetus) are enshrined in article 3 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This is not correct, as Article 1 makes it clear from its opening statement that “all human beings are born free.” Article 3 states that “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person.”

There is no mention as Mr Plaisted contends of a right to life from conception.

The European Convention on Human Rights makes similar reference to the person, but not the unborn foetus.
