THE reason why Brexit is “surrounded by the fog of negotiation and confusion” (Countdown to Brexit SWA, March 30) is that Article 50, which launches the Brexit process, was triggered prematurely without a serious attempt to understand the complexities involved.

The leading Brexiters, David Davis, Boris Johnson and Liam Fox are all on record claiming that Brexit would be a simple process but of course it has turned out to be anything but. So were these people completely ignorant of the complexities or were they deliberately misleading the public?

A vote to accept or reject whatever deal David Davis and his team can concoct will take place in the autumn. This is by no means enough time to “seal the deal” particularly in regard to the Irish border, but so frantic are some Tory MPs to quit Europe, urged on by an equally frantic Press, that they will accept any botched up deal that gets us out of the EU. The task of sorting out exactly what has been agreed will have to wait until after we have left in a year’s time.

The whole business of Brexit shames the nation. The referendum campaign was notoriously dishonest, on both sides admittedly, but the tone of much of our national Press was hysterical with absolutely no attempt at balance.

The public were poorly served.
