MAY I respond to Mr Dix’s appalling outburst calling for the culling of Blackwood town councillors in his letter of May 28.

As Mr Dix is well aware town councillors carry out their duties in their communities on a voluntary unpaid basis.

In relation to Blackwood town council I would like to point out that every year we stage the carnival, lantern parade and work in conjunction with the borough council to bring other major events to Blackwood like the Christmas market. Also we as a town council in the past four years have financially supported many local clubs, organisations, schools and charities by donating almost £15,000 to these good causes some of whom would have really struggled without our support.

May I also respectfully remind Mr Dix that when given the opportunity at a grass roots level to serve on committees in 2008/09 at Blackwood town council he refused to participate, culminating in him resigning and walking away in November 2009 stating in the South Wales Argus that he wanted to wipe his hands clean of local politics by leaving the town council.

In my humble opinion a very interesting statement made by someone who appears to want to be a career politician!
