IN RESPONSE to the letter published recently from Mr Steve Delahaye (June 18) I am very pleased to let Mr Delahaye and the people of Newport know that replacement composite plaques have already been commissioned by the Newport Harbour Board. Jointly funded by Associated British Ports, the Newport Mission for Seamen and the Newport Harbour Board, the three new plaques will soon be in place on the Newport Docks Disaster Memorial in St Woolos Cemetery.

The original brass plaques are safely in storage at the Newport Docks and we have proposed they now be placed in St Woolos Cathedral as a permanent memorial to the men who lost their lives in 1909 constructing the new lock in Newport dock.
