Don't ignore health hazard

DESPITE the demented, patronising, ignorant and pompous comments of Jim Dyer (Argus, June 14) the fact is that dogs’ mess is widespread across the City of Newport, because of some irresponsible owners.

At the recent St. Julians PACT council and community meeting, several responsible dog owners agreed that this is a nightmarish health and safety problem. In the 21st century, how can the authorities ignore and allow this mess to continue and increase in our streets, playing fields, football pitches and public places and as Matthew Pimm (June 8) expects; with the potential mess in our shops, banks, pubs etc?

Mr Donovan is right though. There are some lazy, uncaring people around Newport who shouldn't be in charge of a dog at all.
It is not acceptable to walk a dog and allow it to make a mess outside other people's houses or on sports fields etc.
But Newport Council can't always play the role of "nanny" and tidy up after these irresponsible "not in my backyard" people. There isn't the money and there are not unlimited resources. We have a low council tax and therefore must put up with fewer services.
