Embrace spirit of Olympics

I TOTALLY agree with your Editorial column on July 28 when you said we should all enjoy the spirit of the Olympics in Wales, as well as England, and wish all our Welsh participants well in their respective games.

It is truly a wonderful international atmosphere. I can remember as a young man being at the Olympics in 1948 with two uncles at the first three days of it and watched the great Ken Jones of Newport and Wales fame run in the 4 X 100 relay race.

Wish ALL members of the Great Britain team well, not just the ones local to you!

I'm avoiding the whole **** thing. It's a shameful waste of money when we need our young people in work and our sick and vulnerable to have meaningful lives. Instead we are cheering on billions in wasted money to fatten already fat cats and banking criminals. There is no chance I am forgetting that to watch sweaty people running around promoting MacDonald's. Its an Olympics of shame, of greed, and corporate rip-offs. I don't care who wins, I know who loses.

Mervyn, have you ever heard the expression that one needs to spend money to make money? An investment is not a waste of money - it is an expenditure, but with long-term benefits. Only the perpetual moaners this country seems infested with could ever see the hosting of the Olympics as anything other than a positive thing.

They are NOT positive for the areas I stated, nor for Wales, no-one stands to gain but London. You are falling for the hype of Coe and Cameron both tainted politicians. One prevented ordinary people buying tickets and forcing those that had them to pay through the nose and be offered no choice at the sites offering corporate sponsorship seating that wasn't used whilst genuine fans waited in Vain outside. The other clearly stated the 'Benefits of the Olympics, will greatly enhance LONDON's standing in the world.." we know ! They fined a butcher for making sausages for the Olympics because corporate sponsors had paid through the nose to ban competition, surely what the Olympics is all about ? The investment was by ALL of us, but all of us are not gong to benefit from it. Most are pro athletes who make thousands a year on the circuits anyway the amateur status has gone really. Do not fall for Cameron's attempt to divert attention away from the mess they are making.

Mervyn - you are right. It's all a massive government conspiracy. Getting Britain shown on the televisions of billions of potential tourists and investors worldwide will have no positive benefits at all.

Glad to see you have observed the light. Just do not read the monthly financial statistics and you'll be fine in your Ivory Tower....
