Headphones are a danger

HEADPHONES, earphones, iPods – whatever? Have our kids been rendered deaf or merely oblivious to the sound of traffic?

Three times over the past fortnight I have narrowly missed running down children so engrossed with their plug-in music systems that they had no notion that a car was anywhere near them, let alone screeching to a halt to avoid them. Strangely enough, on each occasion the child was mobile; one on a bike, the other two on skateboards. Will the next be on a scooter and will he be so lucky?

Child versus car? Inevitably the child will come off worse, probably disastrously so. One wonders if their parents are prepared for such a loss or willing to push a wheelchair for the rest of their lives. I’m not being a kill-joy here. Let’s face it; everyone loves music but let’s not wish our children to love it to death.

Why are you travelling so fast in a residential area that you need to "screech to a halt" to avoid people? At 30mph or under there is ample time to safely bring a car to a stop without losing control in such a way.

Their are public warnings already about using ipods and smart phones and being oblivious of things around you. 45 people died in the London area walking straight into traffic in one year. That's fine 45 less idiots to avoid, but the problem is they can cause injury to OTHERS. Anyone who wants to put a stop to this menace contact me, I have an e-mail link to ipod and mobile jamming equipment :) Switch the idiots off.

Owain Vaughan, you are completely wrong. Even at less than 30mph, if someone unexpectedly just steps out in front of you when you are right next to them, there is going to be a screeching of tires, and possibly an accident.

A properly-executed emergency stop should not result in a skid. Anyone who has passed a driving test will have done many of them. The roads are full of hazards and anyone driving through a residential area where there is the potential for someone to blindly step into the road should be aware of the possibility and moderate their speed accordingly.
