READING S R Cole’s letter (August 16) about his problems with the BT Broadband, some friends of mine asked me if I could help with their computer.

While checking their computer I ran a broadband speed check and it showed that their BT broadband speed was 0.25mbs, as was Mr Coles’. I contacted BT at their department for broadband problems located in Exeter. When they checked the broadband speed, they also found that it was running extremely slowly. A couple of hours later, after BT asked me to carry out a number of checks within the home, which included moving the router down into the hall to the master socket and trying various filters. My friends were asked to leave the router and its power supply plugged into the master socket overnight and most of the following day so that further tests could be carried out.

The following day BT telephoned to say that they had fixed the problem and that the broadband speed was up to 5mbs. Again testing the line showed that the speed was now 3mbs. So BT customers, check to see if you are getting what you are paying for.
