Reversed chevrons on Newport coat of arms shield a sign of disgrace

In partial answer to Mr Brewer’s query in Friday’s issue, I cannot positively identify three red on yellow chevrons on the shield outside Newport Castle except, according to my somewhat antiquated book on heraldry, an identical device exists – English, dating back to at least the 13th century, but otherwise anonymous. However, as far as I can gather, the fact that the chevron on Newport’s own coat of arms is reversed is indicative of disgrace. No surprise there, then.
