Centre looks like war zone
2:43pm Friday 7th September 2012 in Letters
I paid one of my increasingly occasional visits to Newport’s town centre the other day. What a scene of devastation. As if the town – sorry, city (still don’t get it) – hasn’t suffered enough already. Have we a death wish or has someone on the council insulted a municipal witch doctor somewhere?
It’s all very well for our few remaining loyal traders to make last-ditch contingencies or maintain a Blitz mentality, but this isn’t the work of the Luftwaffe. It’s the incompetent machinations of a disinterested gas board that couldn’t give a damn. Come on, Newport! It’s time to put the proverbial boot up a complacent backside.

I too have been into Newport City Centre and we have to face reality. There are steel barriers everywhere, no workmen at all in sight on the McDonalds/Greggs side of the works and on the otherside (outside Starbucks) a couple of workmen were washing the pavement meaning muddy water was running everywhere. You actually have to have workmen working to finish the works. I feel so sorry for the trades people of the town they have no chance of increased trade as I was dodging around barriers, mud, dirty water and you just couldn't get where you wanted to go. I still shop in the Newport but today was the pits. The place looks a mess and now amount of upbeat talk is going to change the reality of the situation.

What is the purpose of this letter? The overrunning gas works are well known. Try and stick up for your city instead of running it down all the time!

If their salaries were dependent on their performance then we might get somewhere. As it is we will have an expensively paved wasteland only any use to skateboarders.
They are all to busy trying to get Traveller camps in their rivals constituencies by the look of it.
It is embarrassing to watch.
Where are the business men for Gods sake

The last time I went to town was to admire the Clock and Chartist mural.
Everyone else goes to Cwmbran.
By the time Newport finally gains a city centre worth visiting, everyone will have forgotten where it is and become too used to Cwmbran's free parking to want to give it up.
