Slipway would pay for itself

I REFER to David Deans’ article in the Argus, October 6, “Councillor calls for city centre slipway after spate of rescues”.

Although I agree, it is ludicrous that Newport Rescue Services have to launch at Uskmouth! Has anyone given any thought about incorporating a public and a rescue slipway like Porthcawl? Like me, there are thousands of water sports enthusiasts, small boat owners, anglers, canoeists etc, who spend a fortune having to travel to Cardiff Bay and Swansea and pay to launch their craft. I believe a slipway in Newport would pay for itself and keep paying for itself, so what’s the problem? The council keeps banging on about bringing the Usk back to life, but nobody seems to do anything about it! A prospective site would be the abandoned allotments at Shaftesbury Park, controversially shut down by the council, as something has to be done with the land.

Whilst I agree with the idea of creating a slipway for positive reasons such as increased use of the river I have a real issue with original article's implication that would result in taxpayers money being used to build a slip-way based on a need to rescue mindless idiots who pay little or no regard to the cost and risks associated with fire-fighters having to rescue them.
