Commemorate First World War

MR JOHN (Letters, October 17) may or may not be right in his analysis of the causes and nature of the First World War. Either way, however, it will be important to commemorate the start of the war, if only to provide an opportunity to discuss why such a cataclysmic event came about. From there we can go on to commemorate the millions who lost their lives, including many who shared Mr John’s socialist convictions. Part of the task, however, will be to ensure that the commemorations are conducted in a sensitive manner and not hijacked by those who wish to glorify war. The Gwent branch of the Western Front Association will play its part in commemorations. Peter Strong, Chair, Gwent Branch, Western Front Association
