Abergavenny Farmers’ Market has become so popular that the event is being held twice a month instead of just on the fourth Thursday.

Margharet Whilding, the chairman of Abergavenny Farmers’ Market explained: “The market trade has been building up so we decided that another Thursday in the month would benefit both shoppers and producers. We have a good variety of stalls and we hope to bring in a new cheese producer in September.”

Speaking at last week’s Farmers’ Market she said they were pleased to see the Market Hall so busy, despite some producers going to Monmouthshire Show instead.

Richard Beard of Cothi Valley Goats travels all the way from Carmarthenshire with his cheeses but says he has too many other commitments to manage to support the market on the second Thursday of the month. He recently featured on the BBC2 television programme Great British Menu as he supplied Abergavenny competitor Stephen Terry with goats’ cheese for his starter.

Evelyn Davies is a busy grandmother but she still finds time to entertain the children who visit the Farmers’ Market during the school holidays. She provides a free service and on Thursday the children were decorating paper plates which they took home with them.

In addition t the producers’ stalls there are always three charity stalls run by No Pity Products, a project based at Court Cupboard, Llantilio Pertholey which provides work for people with learning disabilities; Friends of St Anne’s Hospice and Hereford Owl Rescue.

The next Farmers’ Market will be on Thursday, September 11.
