Abergavenny Rotary Club recently presented certificates to four young people who took part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA).

David Sanders, Joe Hassall, Peter Letson and David Love received their certificates from club president, Martin Love.

The awards are designed to develop the leadership skills of young people with potential. It is hoped they will also nurture the skills of future leaders of the community and help those who may need further encouragement to exploit their leadership skills.

The RYLA course took place at the Dolygaer Outdoor Education Centre in the Brecon Beacons, run by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s education department.

All the staff are full-time, fully-trained teachers in their own field.

Activities at the course centre are physically challenging and include abseiling, rock climbing, caving, canoeing and water sports.

Anthony Davies, chairman of Abergavenny Rotary Club’s youth activities committee, said: “Two of the young people gave a brief presentation to the club members about their experiences and how they valued the opportunity to take part.

“They felt they would benefit in the future from what they had learned and thanked the club for funding the award.”

RYLA is a scheme the club has been keen to support.
