The Chepstow Group of Gwent Wildlife Trust has run two events as part of the Chepstow Festival.  The wide-ranging Festival publicity always guarantees some extra interest, but it was still startling when 60 people turned out on a very indifferent, grey evening to take part in the walk at Mathern.  Unfortunately, owing to safety concerns, it was necessary to alter the route of the walk and apologies are due to those who were disappointed in this; however, the new route followed a very scenic and interesting series of paths, making walkers and members realise what beautiful countryside lies behind the well-known roads and villages. Some handsome trees were identified,  different types of grassland discussed, and some helpful tips on bird identification were given.

On the following Sunday, the Drill Hall was given over to an exhibition explaining the many of the activities of the Trust, especially focusing on the fascinating wetlands at Magor Marsh. This was run in partnership with the Campaign against the Levels Motorway and their thought-provoking displays attracted a great deal of interest.

Children enjoyed some fun activities and made some cheerful dragonflies and badges to take away with them. The family quiz was entertaining and quite challenging. Congratulations are due to the “Wildlife Wizards”, the Summers family from St Arvans, who won the prize of a Family Pass to all Gwent Wildlife Trust events right up until the end of 2009.  Well done also to the Slack family from Tintern who won the Children Only round, and received a year’s free membership of the Trust.
