A late start to the season and poor weather has failed to deter the Black Rock fishermen this year – so far they have managed to take four salmon and have recruited a new fisherman to their ranks.

Sam Watkins is from Sudbrook and is the youngest fisherman to take up fishing in this traditional manner for many years. He has much to learn but the Fishery hopes he will stay with them and enjoy working the water.

Fishing started late this season due to the ongoing negotiations with the Environment Agency regarding the future fishing on the Severn estuary. An agreement was finally reached where the fishermen sacrificed their unlimited catch and agreed to a maximum salmon catch limit of 15 fish between all the fishermen. They also agreed to “tag” the fish they take, becoming the first traditional fishery in Wales to agree to this. This has been done to reassure the Agency that their catch comes from a sustainable source.

The fishermen would like to thank everyone who helped and supported them throughout this difficult time.

Chairman Bob Leonard was presented with a nationwide heritage award in Cardiff for his work preserving and promoting the heritage of the fishery.

This year’s open day will take place on Saturday, August 30 at the Black Rock picnic site, Portskewett, between 2.00 pm and 6.00 pm. There will be a lave net exhibition and demonstrations along with a film of the fishing. Refreshments will also be available.

All are welcome. For further information on any aspect of the fishery or the open day please contact Martin 01633 880494.
