On Saturday, March 1 Skenfrith Supper Club held its annual St. David's Day Supper with Mary Jane's Catering company providing and serving a suitable menu for the occasion. There was Welsh lamb hotpot or a vegetarian lasagne, served with new potatoes and a variety of vegetables, followed by a choice of puddings. Tea and coffee were available after the pudding course, with a chocolate mint to complete the meal. It was a very successful evening and well attended. The room looked just right for the occasion - sparkling white table-cloths, vases of daffodils and yellow and green napkins. Chairman of the hall committee, Stuart Penny, welcomed everyone and said that as it was a St David's day celebration we would be singing the Welsh National Anthem - in Welsh, after coffee. Austin Matthews, one of a handful of Welsh speakers in the area, was asked to lead the singing and encourage everyone to join in. He started with a couple of verses from the great Welsh hymn, Guide me Oh thou Great Jehovah' to the tune Cwm Rhondda'; then a verse or two of a rugby song; and finally Mae henwlad fy nhadau - Land of my Fathers' - a fitting end to a lovely evening.

Stuart announced during the evening that two members of the supper club were celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary on that day - Austin and Barbara Williams - so they had congratulations and a round of applause.
