COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION: Moorland and Broadmead Community Association. At last we are up and running at our new base, Newport East Community Centre. It is situated on the Moorland Park Estate, Lliswerry, on the site of the old centre.

Our opening week went well, and already our diary is filling up with bookings. The centre is available for anybody to use. We have a sports hall, conference facilities with smart board, youth suite, community café, and a secure car park.

We can host meetings, conferences, parties, events, clubs and sports, and can also provide catering, all at very reasonable prices. We are arranging a car boot sale for Sunday, June 1, in the centre car park to raise funds for the association. The cost will be £3 per car.

Our bingo and bowls club started with a swing last week, and is well worth a visit, if only to listen to our regular bingo caller, Fred, who already has quite a following. We will make everybody welcome and it takes place every Tuesday from 2.00pm-4.00pm.

Our parent and toddler group is looking to increase its numbers. It runs on a Wednesday morning from 9.30-11.30am in partnership with Sure Start. While the toddlers are having a ball, the parents, if they wish, can do various activities. So far these have included arts and crafts and sports, but those who choose not to take part can just sit in our friendly café area.

We are still looking for volunteers to help with the running of the centre. We already have a small group from the committee who have worked full time at the centre since it opened. We would like to thank all the volunteers who have given up their time so far, but stress that we need more people on board, especially for evenings and weekends. Contact Sian or Zena on 01633 275421.
