The damp problem in the basement of the splendidly restored Beechwood House has been solved so the community rooms are available for use by local groups.

The St Julian’s Senior Citizens’ Association is now the Orchard Lane Community Centre to avoid confusion with the St Julian’s group, which meets on the estate. The concert on Monday 23rdAugust features the international vocalist, Kathy North.

The event was attended mainly by three- and four-year-olds, but several younger and older brothers and sisters came along, together with parents and grandparents - a party totalling 22.

TEA TIME: Despite the pouring rain, there was a good turnout for the Christian Aid Tea at St Julian's Methodist Church. Newport East MP Jessica Morden called in and won a raffle prize, while a local councillor helped with serving and washing up. The sum of £100 has been raised so far.

WHERE WAS THE ARK? Six local churches held their annual Whitsunday march of Witness. The 100-strong group of all ages walked and sang following a loudspeaker vehicle, but the weather was such that Noah's ark would have been more appropriate.

School block opens

NEW NURSERY: The new nursery block extension at Eveswell Primary School has been completed and is now in use. The cost of £120,000 has been funded by the Early Years Partnership to better meet the needs of the school's three-year-olds.

Miss Gladys Kelson, of Christchurch, Road celebrated her 100th birthday on Easter Monday. Gladys proudly displays her card from the Queen, but sadly cannot see it as she has lost her sight. She also had a visit from the mayor and mayoress, her local councillors and many friends and family.

After a long stay in hospital Councillor Hugh Clark is home and raring to go. It was a very frustrating time for Hugh but at least he was able to catch up on his reading. He is most grateful to the doctors, nurses and other staff who looked after him and to the many people who sent their good wishes.
